The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has announced plans to embark on protest rallies from January 27, 2022 against the removal of fuel subsidy.
According to the union, the resolution to embark on the nationwide protest was made at its National Executive Council meeting, held at the Labour House, Abuja, on Friday.
The union explained that the protests will culminate in the submission of protest letters to all the state governors, and would be followed with another nationwide protest in Abuja on February 1, 2022.
The Federal Government had announced plan to remove fuel subsidy by mid-2022.
With the impending decision, many experts have hinted that a litre of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) may sell for between N320 and N340 in 2022.
However, the NLC has rejected the move, adding that subsidy removal would expose Nigerian workers and the generality of the citizenry to acute deprivation, hardship and suffering as it would worsen the current hyperinflation in the country.
The NLC also noted that the protests would kick off instantly and without notice in all the 36 states in case the government goes ahead to increase fuel before January 27.
This was contained in a statement issued after the meeting and signed by the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and Secretary–General, Emmanuel Ugboaja.
The statement reads in part, “Pursuant to its rejection and resistance of further increase in the price of petrol, to organize protest rallies in all the 36 states of the federation on 27th January 2022 which would culminate in the submission of protest letters to all the 36 state governors. Subsequently, a national protest will take place on 1st February 2022 in Abuja.
“In case government decides to announce new petrol prices before the proposed protests, the protest will kick off instantly and without any other further notice in every state of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.”
