- Gives President Ultimatum To Stop Persistent Insecurity
Opposition Senators at the Nigerian Senate, on Wednesday staged a walk out of plenary over the persistent widespread insecurity bedevilling the nation.
The Senators across parties issued a six-week ultimatum to President Muhammadu Buhari to find lasting solutions to the security challenges roiling most parts of Nigeria.
Before staging the walk-out, the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Phillip Aduda had raised a point of order demanding that the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan discuss the security situation in the country and the impeachment of Buhari.
But Lawan, who presided over the plenary, threw out the request, saying the point of order raised fell flat on its face.
The response angered the opposition members as all the lawmakers elected on the platforms of all political parties other than the All Progressives Congress (APC) took turns to walk out of the legislative chamber while the plenary was ongoing.
Addressing a press conference at the National Assembly in Abuja, the nation’s capital, the Minority leader said the walkout is to show their grievances about the situation of the country.
He wondered why Buhari has failed to stop the bad elements wreaking havoc in the country.
He also threatened to commence impeachment proceedings against the President should he fail to address the insecurity within a six-week ultimatum given by the lawmakers.
The walkout came as the latest in a series of concerns raised by various individuals and groups amid the rising spate of insecurity in the country.
The New Diplomat had reported that concerns over insecurity in the country soared on Tuesday as reports emerged that two terrorist groups, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram are scheming to attack Lagos state, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Kaduna state and some states in the North-West, North-Central and South-West of Nigeria.
It also comes after troops of the 7 Guards Brigade which provide security for the Presidential Villa and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja were ambushed while on patrol along the Kubwa-Bwari Road.
Recently, an advanced convoy of President Muhammadu Buhari was attacked on their way to Daura in Katsina during the last Sallah celebrations.
This as terrorists had also broke into the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, freeing hundreds of their terrorist-colleagues and other inmates detained there.
