Some residents trapped inside an elevator at a residential building in the Banana Island area of Ikoyi were successfully rescued on Monday after being stuck for over 40 minutes.
The New Diplomat had reported that the residents had raised the alarm after the lift malfunctioned, leaving them stranded with no immediate assistance.
A video shared by The New Diplomat on Monday showed the distressed residents sweating and appearing visibly uncomfortable as they remained trapped inside the elevator.
The video, released by one of the occupants, claimed the incident occurred in an apartment building near the Banana Island School Apartments.
In the post accompanying the video, the occupant said attempts to get help from the building management initially yielded little response.
“We are here in the lift of Banana Island School Apartment. We have been stuck here for almost 40 minutes,” the occupant said in the video.
“We are all about suffocating in here. Nobody seems to be doing anything about it. We spoke to the landlady’s daughter, and she said they will see what they can do. Can you imagine?”
Our correspondent gathered that following distress calls and the circulation of the video online, officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were alerted and quickly responded to the scene.
Emergency responders were able to safely evacuate all the trapped occupants from the malfunctioning elevator.
Authorities later confirmed that the situation had been fully resolved and urged members of the public to disregard any reposted videos suggesting the incident was ongoing or that a new case had occurred.
No casualties were reported in the incident.
