Suspected thugs on Saturday disrupted a membership registration exercise organised by the African Democratic Congress in Bakassi Local Government Area, destroying canopies and chairs at the venue.
The incident occurred as the party commenced a membership registration drive and opened a new secretariat in the coastal council area of Cross River State.
In a video of the disruption that has circulated widely on social media, the thugs were seen arriving at the venue in large numbers and vandalising items set up for the exercise.
One of the men, believed to be a leader of the group, was heard issuing threats and ordering the attackers to scatter the gathering.
“What is going on in our Bakassi? Scatter everywhere,” he said.
“We don’t need any party here apart from APC in Bakassi. Scatter everywhere. God punish una there. Everywhere must shut down. We don’t want ADC in this Bakassi.”
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in the state, Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident.
He, however, said no arrests had been made in connection with the disruption as of the time of filing this report.
