A touching video of Senator Barinada Mpigi dancing with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has melted hearts across social media, prompting reflections on the fragility and unpredictability of life.
The video, taken three weeks ago during Wike’s tour of Rivers State, is being shared as Mpigi’s “last dance.” In it, the late lawmaker, representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, is seen enjoying a light-hearted moment with Wike and other associates. The display of camaraderie has resonated deeply online, with many expressing sorrow and offering reflections on mortality.
Journalist Chris Nwandu shared the video on his Facebook page, prompting reactions from viewers.
Abbey Scott wrote, “That is why life must be pathed cautiously and not by gragra.” Emmanuel Adeyemi reflected, “Life… death should serve as a lesson to us all.” Oluleye Omolokun noted, “Politicians have enough protection to stop threats, but cannot stop death. They may avoid accountability to citizens, but they answer to God. God is supreme.”
The New Diplomat had reported that Mpigi passed away on Thursday at the age of 64 after a brief illness. He served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works and was a member of the 10th National Assembly. A source within the National Assembly confirmed his death, which cast a sombre mood over lawmakers during Thursday’s proceedings.
Mpigi’s legislative career began in the House of Representatives, where he was first elected in 2011 and re-elected in 2016. In 2019, he was elected to the Senate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Rivers South-East. During the 9th Assembly, he chaired a joint Senate committee investigating crude oil theft in the Niger Delta, addressing a major national concern amid declining oil revenues and widespread pipeline vandalism.
Mpigi was considered one of Wike’s most trusted allies, and there were indications he was being positioned for a significant role in the 2027 elections. His death comes just three months after the passing of Senator Okey Ezea of Enugu North, underscoring the string of recent losses in the Senate.
