Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and ex-Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant development in the ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso completed his registration as a member of the party on Monday at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, located on Miller Road in the Bompai area of Kano, where he was issued his ADC membership card.
A viral video from the event captured enthusiastic supporters chanting “Obi-Kwankwado,” suggesting a potential joint presidential ticket between the former Kano governor and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Several prominent political figures attended the ceremony, including the ADC National Chairman and former Senate President, David Mark; former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Peter Obi; Senator Dino Melaye; and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun.
Kwankwaso’s defection follows his resignation from the NNPP, which he announced on Sunday, citing the need for political realignment in the country’s evolving political landscape.
In a statement confirming his decision, the former Minister of Defence said he was stepping down from the party with immediate effect.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party with immediate effect,” he said.
Kwankwaso described his departure as a difficult decision given his long association with the party but explained that prevailing political circumstances made it necessary to align with a platform better positioned to bring about change.
“As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he stated.
He expressed appreciation to the NNPP leadership, particularly the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as other party organs, for the support he received during his time in the party.
Kwankwaso also thanked members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and his supporters nationwide for their loyalty and dedication.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
