United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday said American control of Greenland is essential to U.S. national security, linking the Arctic island directly to his proposed Golden Dome air and missile defence system and warning that any alternative arrangement would be unacceptable.
In a post on social media, Trump argued that Greenland’s strategic position makes it indispensable to the United States and to the broader Western defence architecture. “The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building,” he wrote.
Trump also claimed that NATO would be “far more formidable and effective” if Greenland were under U.S. control, adding that the alliance should play a leading role in developing the planned multi-layer missile defence shield. He warned that failure to act could allow rivals such as Russia or China to fill the gap.
The remarks came hours before senior Danish and Greenlandic officials were due at the White House for talks with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, amid growing tension over Washington’s posture on Greenland.
Denmark moved to play down the dispute, with Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen saying Copenhagen was strengthening its military presence in Greenland and engaging allies on an expanded NATO role in Arctic security.
Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of the United States taking over Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, citing its vast size, sparse population and strategic value in the Arctic. The comments have drawn concern from allies and raised fresh questions about alliance unity and respect for sovereignty.
