I just watched a video of Nasir El-Rufai in tears and visible distress as Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II prayed for the repose of his mother.

That sight made my own eyes well up and, for a moment, melted all the resentment I hold against El-Rufai for his politics and policies.

The vulnerability he evinced humanized him and stirred an empathy I never thought possible.

There are no words to express the depth of sorrow that comes with losing a mother. The loss of my father, who was both a mother and a father to me, broke me for years, so I can relate to El-Rufai’s pain.

It makes perfect sense that even his political adversaries have set aside their differences to mourn with him.

May Allah grant Hajiya Umma aljannah firdausi.
