PDP Hails S/Court Ruling on Fayose

APC Loses Bid To Sack Fayose At S/Court

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has described Tuesday’s Supreme Court ruling upholding the election of Ekiti State Governor, Mr.  Ayo Fayose, as a triumph of democracy and the rule of law.

The party said the ruling was a testimony that the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man having sustained the wishes and aspirations of the people of the state as expressed in the June 21, 2014 governorship election.Fayose

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, said the ruling “has given hope to the survival of democracy especially coming at a time when some officials of key institutions of democracy such as INEC and some security personnel have already started compromising their independence apparently under the dictates of an obsessive All Progressives Congress.”

Metuh congratulated Fayose and the people of Ekiti State for their doggedness in the face of daunting challenges from those he described as anti-democratic forces and urged the governor to be magnanimous in victory while using his mandate to deliver good governance in line with the PDP manifesto and vision of its founding fathers.

He restated the PDP resolve to continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the governor and the people of the state and vowed to resist any form of political intimidation or blackmail aimed at destabilising the state.

According to him, “In this regard, we warn all anti-democratic forces hiding in the state, especially the outgoing APC lawmakers, against any action intended directly or indirectly to destabilise the state or undermine this democratically elected PDP government under Fayose.”

NSA: Sambisa Forest To Be Liberated

0

On the one year anniversary of the abduction of over 200 Chibok girls, the National Security Adviser (NSA) Col.  Sambo Dasuki has assured that the girls will be rescued by the military, adding, that the Sambisa Forest will be  liberated before May 29.

In a statement by NSA said, the movement of the terrorists is being monitored and the military is  leaving no stone unturned to “rid the country of the last bastion of terrorists’ infestation”.Sambisa Forest

“Right now, all Boko Haram camps, except Sambisa Forest have been destroyed. The forest would have since been  liberated but for the unfavourable weather condition prevailing in the area as all needed reconnaissance activity and necessary deployment of troops have been made for the operation. ”

“Every movement of the terrorists is being monitored and every necessary detail is being taken care of to rid the country of the last bastion of terrorists’ infestation”.

“Aside the Chibok girls, other Nigerian girls, boys, men and women were abducted by the terrorists and all efforts are being made to rescue them all.”

While appealing for a little more time to complete the routing of terrorists, Dasuki recalled that before elections were postponed in February, over 20 local governments were occupied by Book Haram and that most Nigerians were pleasantly surprised that so much was achieved against insurgency within six weeks.

Commending President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on the successful conduct of the 2015 elections, the security adviser however, noted that nobody pressured the President into conceding defeat in the presidential election.

“President Jonathan had already given his words to all the security and service chiefs before the election that he would abide by the decision of Nigerians. At the meeting, he also told them to perform their duties professionally during the polls.

“While we anticipated that he would congratulate his opponent if the result is announced in favour of opposition candidate, he gratuitously without prompting of anyone conceded defeat to the surprise of all.”

UN: Isis And Boko Haram Using Rape As Weapon of War In ‘Shocking Trend of Sexual Violence’

Nigeria, Mauritius Retain Seats In UN Rights Committees

Extremist groups such as the Islamic State (Isis) and Boko Haram are using rape as a weapon of war, a UN report  has warned.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said 2014 was marked by hundreds of accounts of rape, forced marriage and sexual  slavery in war-torn countries such as Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Nigeria and Central African Republic.

Ban expressed concern over the findings of the UN annual report, which analysed rates of sexual violence against  women and girls, men and boys in 19 countries. The report concluded that sexual violence was not incidental, but  purposely committed by terror groups.

“The confluence of crises wrought by violent extremism has revealed a shocking trend of sexual violence employed as a tactic of terror by radical groups,” Ban said, adding that defeating terror groups around the world is “an essential part of the fight against conflict-related sexual violence”.

The report said that there has been an increase in cases of sexual violence since mid-2014, following the insurgence of IS last summer, that resulted in the abduction, rape and sexual enslavement of thousands of girls from the Yazidi community, which mostly bears the brunt of IS’s persecution of non-Muslims and non-Sunnis.

According to the UN, IS “uses sexual violence to spread terror, persecute ethnic and religious minorities and suppress communities that oppose its ideology”.

Earlier in April, reports emerged that Yazidi girls were snatched from their mothers, sold to IS fighters, tortured and even raped in public by more than two or three insurgents at a time before being freed by IS in northern Iraq.

Boko Haram Using Rape Weapon

The report was published as Nigerians mark one year since more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram in Chibok, Borno state.

The terrorists abducted some 270 schoolgirls from Chibok on 14 April 2014. Shortly after, 50 girlsmanaged to escape but the rest are still missing amid reports they are being used as suicide bombers, raped and forced to marry their abductors.

In a separate report, the UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) warned that some 800,000 children have been displaced due to violence by Boko Haram.  Many of them have been separated from their families and are subjected to abuse such as rape and forced marriage. Some of them are also being used by the terrorists as combatants and for suicide bomb missions.

Chibok girls: Malala Yousafzai Lambasts Nigeria For Not Doing Enough to Find ‘Brave Sisters’

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai has criticised Nigerian leaders for not doing enough to find  the 219 missing schoolgirls abducted by terror group Boko Haram one year ago.

Around 270 schoolgirls from Chibok, a village in Borno state, were kidnapped by the terrorists on 14 April.  Shortly after, some 50 girls managed to escape but the rest are still missing amid reports they are being  raped, forced to marry their abductors and used as suicide bombers.

 Who is Boko Haram?

Boko Haram fights against Western influence in Nigeria and aims to impose its version of Sharia law in the country. The group declared an Islamic caliphate in Gwoza, along the Cameroon border, in August 2014.

Boko Haram has raided several cities in the north of the country in a bid to take control of more land.

Three states, Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, have been under a state of emergency since May 2013, due to Boko Haram’s deadly attacks.

Seventeen-year-old Nobel Peace Prize, Malala Yousafzai , who rose to international fame after she survived an attempted murder by the Pakistani Taliban for her advocacy of free education for girls, said Nigerian leaders and the international community must do more to help the girls.

“In my opinion, Nigerian leaders and the international community have not done enough to help you,” she said in a letter to the girls, whom she called “my brave sisters”.

“I am among many people pressuring them to make sure you are freed,” Malala continued. “Remember that one day your tragic ordeal will end, you will be reunited with your families and friends, and you will have the chance to finish the education you courageously sought.

“I look forward to the day I can hug each one of you, pray with you and celebrate your freedom with your families. Until then, stay strong, and never lose hope. You are my heroes.”

Malala wrote the letter on the eve of the first anniversary of the mass kidnapping. Last July, she urged the Nigerian government to focus on the search of the missing girls during a meeting with the girls’ relatives in Abuja, Borno State.

“If you don’t focus on the future generation it means you are destroying your country. Think about these girls,” she said during the meeting.

As the world marks the first anniversary of the girls’ disappearance, Amnesty International released a report warning that Boko Haram still abducts, tortures, rapes and kills thousands in northern Nigeria.

The UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) reported some 800,000 children have been displaced due to violence by the terror group, which recently pledged allegiance to Islamic State (Isis) terror group.

Nigeria, Russian Firm Stake N16trn To Build Four Nuclear Plants

Nigeria has signed an agreement with a Russian firm, Rosatom, to build four nuclear power plants in the country  valued at $80 billion, about N16 trillion.

The power plants which will have a combined capacity of 4,800 megawatts, are expected to come on stream  between 2025 and 2035.Build Four Nuclear Plants

Speaking at a forum in Kenya Tuesday, Mr. Franklin Erepamo Osaisai, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, said the building of the nuclear plants would be financed by Rosatom, which will then build, own, operate and transfer the plants to the government and people of Nigeria after a number of years.

Jonathan Saved Nigeria From Bloodshed – PDP BOT

0

President GoodLuck Jonathan saved Nigeria from bloodshed by conceding defeat to   Muhammadu  Buhari of All Progressives Congress (APC), says Sen. Walid Jibrin, a PDP stalwart.

Jibrin, who is also the PDP Board of Trustee (BOT) Secretary, said this on Tuesday while speaking with the  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in his country home Nasarawa, Nasarawa Local Government Area of the  state.

He called on politicians to emulate Jonathan by accepting the outcome of the March 28 and April 11  elections  in good fate, in order to forestall post-election violence and in the interest of peace and development.Jonathan Saved Nigeria

“For Jonathan to accept defeat when he lost his second-term presidential ambition to Buhari, he has saved Nigeria from post-election violence and bloodshed.

“The acceptance of the defeat does not only save Nigeria from post-election crisis but it also gave Jonathan a high level of respect from all Nigerians and even the international community

“This shows that Jonathan is a true democrat, who has the interest of Nigerians at heart and we will continue to pray for him and other elected leaders to enable them to succeed.

“I also want to call on all stakeholders and other Nigerians to do everything possible to be at peace, because no nation can achieve development without peace, which is not negotiable.”

Jibrin expressed optimism that the PDP would bounce back in the future and urged the supporters of the party to unite and embrace one another, irrespective of their backgrounds.

He explained that PDP government, since its inception in Nigeria, had done a lot in fighting poverty, hunger, unemployment as well as promoting peace and boosting socio-economic development.

The PDP BOT secretary said that Jonathan demonstrated a high level of maturity by conceding defeat and urged other politicians to always emulate him.

Jibrin urged the party’s supporters and other Nigerians to be law abiding, respect constituted authority, live in peace and tolerate one another, irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliation.

APC Loses Bid To Sack Fayose At S/Court

ABUJA – The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal that was lodged against Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State by the All Progressives Congress, APC.

In their unanimous judgement this morning, a seven-man panel of Justices of the apex court led by Justice John  Fabiyi, held that the appeal which challenged Fayose’s election victory, lacked merit.affirmed Fayose

‎ The panel maintained that the APC failed to prove its allegation that the election was fraught with unparalleled  irregularities, adding that the allegation that Fayose tendered forged Higher National Diploma Certificate ‎to the  Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was not proved beyond every reasonable doubt.

While upholding the concurrent judgements of both the Ekiti State Governorship Tribunal and the Court of Appeal which had earlier affirmed Fayose’s victory, the apex court, ‎further stressed that the respondent (Fayose) was not validly impeached in 2006.

A Yazidi Captive’s Tale: Sold by ISIS As A Sex Slave

0

In the canvas expanse of the Shariya refugee camp, thousands of Yazidis live within hearing distance of one  of Iraqi Kurdistan’s frontlines with ISIS.

The vast majority of the camp’s occupants are from the town of Sinjar and fled the ISIS assault there back  in August. But not everyone escaped. ISIS took thousands of Yazidis captive.

Men faced a choice convert to Islam or be shot. But the Islamist militants (ISIS) separated the young women  and girls to be sold as sex slaves.ISIS and sex slaves

In its fourth edition of “Dabiq,” the ISIS online magazine, an article titled “The revival of slavery before the hour,” outlines the group’s twisted justification and guidelines for the enslavement of the Yazidis.

“One should remember that enslaving the families of the kuffar (infidels) and taking their women as concubines is a firmly established aspect of Shariah,” the article reads.

We’re told that women who have just given birth or are breastfeeding are considered impure and cannot be taken as sexual slaves — but Hanan, 19, was neither of those things.

“They separated all of us,” she says. “They dragged us away by our hair. They took married women, young ones. The youngest with us was just 10. We were all crying.

“They said we are going to marry you off, you will forget your family.”

‘Sex slave warehouse’

For the first week, Hanan was held with 50 others, regularly beaten and threatened with torture, and fed just a bowl of rice.

The group was then taken to a three story building in Mosul she described as a sex slave warehouse, where hundreds of girls and women were held.

“They would line about 50 of us up at a time, in rows of 10. They would say don’t move, don’t cry or we will beat you. The men would come in and describe the kind of girl they wanted and then they would pick and choose as they pleased,” she recalls.

She was eventually chosen, part of a group of 25. From that group Hanan was separated into a smaller group of seven and taken into a house in a village.

Two ISIS fighters guarded the door and ordered the girls to clean and bathe themselves.

“They brought in a Yazidi girl who had been with them for two months. She was wearing the black niqab. They said to us we are going to do to you what we did to her,” Hanan says. “The girl spoke to us in Kurdish and said they beat me, they cuffed me and raped me.”

Hanan and the others decided they had to try to escape. That night they crawled out the bedroom window.

“The fourth girl jumped out, I was the fifth. I crawled to the wall and was about to jump over it and then I saw their flashlight,” she tells me. “They caught the last two girls.”

They ran, and somehow evaded capture. Four hours later they were out of ISIS territory.

“If I just see someone with a beard I start shaking,” Hanan says.

Now physically free but mentally still captive, Hanan remains tormented — like so many others, by what she has been through and what those still with ISIS are being forced to endure — a fate worse than death.

Buhari Gets World Bank Backing To Probe NNPC

Subsidy Removal: NNPC Ends Crude Swap Contracts with Foreign Refiners

The World Bank has thrown its weight behind President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to probe the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC over allegations of missing funds.

Speaking in a video conference from Washington to journalists from across Africa on the release of the  bank’s analysis of issues shaping the continent entitled, ‘Africa’s Pulse’, top officials of the bank  commended President Goodluck Jonathan for exhibiting political maturity after the March 28 presidential  election that would end the tenure of his administration on May 29.countries in the region

The World Bank’s Chief Economist for Africa, Mr. Francisco Ferreira, said looking into financial records of  the country, especially allegation of corruption at the NNPC, would check impunity and build public  institutions in the future.

He said, “One norm that has to change is the norm of impunity. I am from Brazil myself. So I am also used to a country where people could be corrupt and escape justice. That keeps the people to keep doing it.

“So, the current stand of the government-elect to look into what happened in the past hopefully will have consequences for the future. And those consequences will be that institutions will be stronger; norms will be cleaner and people will not have to steal millions of dollars from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

“People have alleged in the past that there had been major corruption scandals there. If that stops, then that will have very high returns in terms of the money staying around to be spent on education, health, roads and power that the poor people across the country need.

“So, my sense is that it will be good to promote cleanliness in politics.”

Answering question on some other African countries that have elections between 2015 and 2017, Ferreira said there was no need to be afraid, adding that the fear of elections would drive away investments from the region.

He said the example that had been shown by Jonathan and Nigeria in the just-concluded general election showed that the continent could get it right in terms of transition to new governments.

Ferreira praised Jonathan for political maturity that he exhibited during the elections, adding that if Nigeria could get it right; other countries in the region should also be able to get it right.

Answering a question from a South African journalist on the possibility of the country overtaking Nigeria as the largest economy on the continent given the fall of Nigeria’s main export, crude oil, Ferreira said it did not look plausible.

Also answering a question from an Angolan journalist on who between Nigeria and his country was managing the fall in oil prices better, the World Bank expert said both countries were doing well in putting measures in place to check the decline.

He praised both countries for allowing their currencies to float according to market forces rather than living in denial of the crisis occasioned by the decline in crude oil exports.

Ferreira, however, added that Nigeria stood a better chance to recover faster from the decline because the structure of the country’s economy was more diversified than that of Angola.

The report, Africa’s Pulse, presented by the World Bank Lead Economist for Africa, Punan Chuhan-Pole, stated that sub-Saharan Africa’s growth would slow in 2015 to four per cent from 4.5 per cent in 2014.

The downturn largely reflects the fall in the prices of oil and other commodities, according to the twice-yearly analysis of the issues shaping Africa’s economic prospects.

The 2015 forecast is below the 4.4 per cent average annual growth rate of the past two decades, and well short of Africa’s peak growth rates of 6.4 per cent in 2002-08.

Excluding South Africa, the average growth for the rest of sub-Saharan Africa was forecast to be around 4.7 per cent.

The World Bank Vice- President for Africa, Mr. Makhtar Diop, said, “Despite strong headwinds and new challenges, sub-Saharan Africa is still experiencing growth. And with challenges come opportunities.

“The end of the commodity super-cycle has provided a window of opportunity to push ahead with the next wave of structural reforms and make Africa’s growth more effective at reducing poverty.”

Sub-Saharan Africa is a net exporter of primary commodities. Oil is the most important commodity traded in the region, followed by gold and natural gas, the report stated.

It added that over 90 per cent of the total exports of eight major oil-exporting countries came from the three biggest exports of each country, which represent nearly 30 per cent of their GDP.

Recent price declines are not confined to oil, the report said; adding that the prices of other commodities were now more closely correlated both with oil prices and with one another.

As a result, terms of trade are declining widely among most countries in the region, according to the report, which asserted that the 36 African countries with expected terms of trade deterioration were home to 80 per cent of the population and 70 per cent of the economic activities in the region.

Nigeria Abductions: Chibok Girls Remembered 1Year on

0

Ceremonies are to be staged around the world to mark one year since more than 200 girls were abducted  by Nigerian militant Islamist group Boko Haram.

A procession will be held in the capital, Abuja, with 219 girls taking part to represent each missing girl.

The abduction of the girls in Chibok in north-eastern Nigeria sparked global outrage, with nations such as  the US and China promising to help find them.Nigerian militant Islamist group

There have been reported sightings of the girls, but none has been found.

The Nigerian militant Islamist group (Boko Haram) say the girls have converted to Islam and been married off. One witness told the BBC that she saw more than 50 of them alive three weeks ago in the north-eastern town of Gwoza.

Analysis: Will Ross, BBC Nigeria correspondent

It has been a whole year of agony for the relatives of the missing 219 Chibok girls. There have been a few sightings of some of the abducted students but very little official information from a government that has long promised to rescue them from the clutches of Boko Haram.

One mother told the BBC she sometimes arranges her 19-year-old daughter’s clothes in the hope that she is about to return home.

The scale of this conflict is so grim that the Chibok girls represent just a fraction of those seized by the Nigerian militant Islamist group. Many have escaped partly thanks to a recent military offensive – but not the Chibok girls.

Turning the tide against Boko Haram?

Who are the militants?

High-profile figures such as Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai and US First Lady Michelle Obama were among those who drew attention to their plight on Twitter last year under the #BringBackOurGirls Boko Haram insurgency in the north.

Since then, campaigners have criticised the Nigerian government of outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan for not doing enough to find the girls and combat the six-year Boko Haram insurgency in the north, in which thousands of people have been killed.

Mr Jonathan suggested to the BBC’s Newsday that political rivalries had hampered the federal government’s ability to grasp the scale of the Chibok attack and respond to it, as the government of Borno state, a Boko Haram stronghold, was run by an opposition party.

“There is more politics involved than concern for the girls,” he said.

And Amnesty International say the terrorists have abducted 2,000 girls and women since the start of last year, becoming cooks, sex slaves and fighters.

Nigeria’s incoming president, Muhammadu Buhari, has promised to “crush” the insurgents and said his government would “do everything in its power to bring them home”.

However, he added: “As much as I wish to, I cannot promise that we can find them.”

How Elections Were Rigged, By PDP, APC

0

The struggle to win more governorship between the political parties, yesterday, shifted to the media with the two major political parties accusing each other of conspiring with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and security  agencies to rig the governorship elections against them where they lost out.

The recriminations came as INEC declared governorship contests in Abia, Imo and Taraba States as inconclusive.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, a coalition of 60 civil society organisations, yesterday urged INEC to clinically scrutinize results from Abia, Akwa Ibom and Rivers States. The coalition in a statement, yesterday particularly affirmed that there was sufficient reason to “question the credibility of the elections results in Rivers and Akwa Ibom States.”

Echoing the CSOs, the European Union, EU, Election Observation Mission, EU EOM, pointed at Rivers and Akwa Ibom States as the two most outstanding states where the elections were marred by violence and deliberate interference.

How elections were manipulated in Akwa Ibom, Rivers —APC

Briefing newsmen in Lagos, yesterday, on the outcome of the elections, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, painted a picture of how, according to him, the elections in Rivers and Akwa Ibom were manipulated by the Presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He said the party was left with no option than to call for the cancellation of the election conducted in the two states.

Explaining how the elections were manipulated, in the two states, he said: “As you would recollect, our party’s chapter in Rivers had written a petition complaining of the crass partisanship of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police in the Presidential and National Assembly elections held on March 28. Because of this petition, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba posted three Commissioners of Police from the Force Headquarters to oversee the April 11 Governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers State but as soon as the President learnt of this development, he directed the IGP to reverse the decision and instead requested that AIG Tunde Ogunsakin be posted to oversee the April 11 elections in Rivers State.

“As soon as electoral materials were distributed, the DPO for Akukutoru Local Government Area simply handed over the election materials for this local government to the militants. Upon learning of this development, AIG Ogunshakin ordered that the materials be recovered and given to the Electoral Officer for the local government within the next hour.

“Irked by AIG Ogunsakin’s directive, the Presidency ordered him to leave Rivers State within six hours, and a pliant replacement was asked to take over from him. From then on, unimaginative terror was unleashed on the electorate particularly on APC members and supporters. It was a straight fight between the police, the militants and the PDP on the one hand and the APC on the other hand.

“Contrary to the directive from INEC that card readers be used for the elections, the machines were discarded in Rivers and that is why the voters turnout for Rivers, as announced by INEC stood at more than 75per cent compared with the national average of between 25 and 35 per cent.”

Election materials not supplied to most polling unitsin A-Ibom

Speaking on the rigging method used in Akwa Ibom State, Mohammed said election materials were not supplied to most of the polling units in the state.

He said: “In former Governor Victor Attah’s ward in Ibesikpo Asutan, three contiguous polling units did not receive election materials while most of the polling units in Oruk Anam, which is the home local government area of Atuekong Etiebet and Chief Soni Udom, Director-General of the APC Governorship Campaign Organisation, most of the polling units did not receive election materials.

“In areas where polling materials were received, hordes of deadly armed thugs escorted by men in Nigeria Police and Army uniforms stormed the polling units and carted away the election materials midway into the accreditation process.”

Killings in A-Ibom

According to him several cases of ballot snatching were reported in the state in the course of which, according to him, several members of the APC, who were seen as being in the way of the alleged PDP thugs, were killed.

According to him, the killing of an APC member in Ini Local Government Area was acknowledged by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. Adisa Bolanta, who was in charge of elections in the state.

He thus called on democracy enthusiasts and civil society organisations to join APC in calling for the outright cancellation of what he described as phoney elections conducted in Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and Abia states.

INEC, security operatives manipulated polls in favour of APC —PDP

The PDP in its retort also accused the APC of collaborating with INEC and security agencies to rig the elections across the country.

The party in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, flayed INEC and security officials of having succumbed to the intimidating propaganda of the APC.

According to the party, “evidences abound of widespread irregularities across the country with INEC rejecting results from the strongholds of PDP candidates for no just cause while accepting the figures those of the APC.

“In Lagos, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Ogun, Oyo, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Niger, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi and Imo states, there are proofs of electoral manipulations ranging from under-age voting, ballot stuffing and intimidation of PDP supporters to alteration of some aspects of the process in favour of APC.

“In Abia State, but for the outcry of the people and timely intervention of the INEC headquarters which rejected the illegal cancellation of results from three local governments and strongholds of the PDP by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, even after they have been announced by the returning officers, the PDP would have been robbed of its well deserved victory in those areas.

“As a responsible party committed to national unity and democracy, our members have remained peaceful and orderly; our candidates have been conceding defeat in the interest of peace while we elect to channel our protest to the appropriate quarters. The same has not been seen of the APC, which has unleashed its members to cause mayhem and harass our supporters in states where PDP candidates clearly won, such as Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers and Gombe states.

“While we urge INEC to take disciplinary actions against its erring officials, we strongly call to question the sincerity of some of the observers especially regarding their failure to raise issues on the irregularities that characterized the voting pattern in most of the states where APC candidates have been declared winner.

“Finally, we invite Nigerians and the international community to note the emerging dangerous trend in our country. There are rising concerns that the APC may have commenced a systematic destruction of democratic institutions and culture, which the PDP successfully nurtured in the last 16 years. Indeed, we wonder if there is a deliberate attempt to also erode the discipline and professionalism of our security forces and entrench the culture of impunity our society.”

The party, however, urged the citizens not to despair but to brace up and resist all anti-democratic and dictatorial tendencies, noting that it is repositioning to stand by the people by providing a credible opposition and returning to power in four years.

CSOs urge Jega to probe Abia, A-Ibom, Rivers results

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Civil Society Room, yesterday, urged INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, to clinically scrutinise the final collated results from Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Abia states.

The coalition which monitored governorship and atate Assembly elections across the federation further decried what it termed as “weak oversight powers of the national headquarters of INEC over Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs.”

It urged the INEC boss to specifically pay closer attention to results from the three aforementioned states, insisting that there were “good grounds to question the credibility of the election results in both Rivers and Akwa Ibom states. A country cannot afford to have state level elections held as it has been done in these three states.”

Consequently, the CSOs, implored Professor Jega to take steps towards ensuring that the final results returned from the three states were cross-checked with the total number of accredited voters as captured by the Smart Card Reader Machines.

“The machines must be preserved, evidence extracted from them and juxtaposed with the final results”, the observer groups maintained.

The coalition in a statement read by the Executive Director of Policy and Legal Advocacy Center, PLAC, Mr. Clement Nwankwo said: “In our view, INEC should concern itself with possible negative public perception of the elections in the three states, as a way of strengthening the trust of the electorate in the voting process.

“The Situation Room also notes and condemns in the strongest terms the leading role played by prominent public political office holders and other politicians as well as some INEC officials in encouraging and actively taking part in organised misconduct and disorderly behaviour that violated the sanctity of the electoral process and calls that action be taken to investigate their activities with a view to prosecuting and sanctioning them, if found culpable under the law.

Weak oversight powers of INEC over RECs

“In addition, Situation Room is concerned about the weak oversight powers of the national headquarters of INEC over Resident Electoral Commissioners and State INEC offices in the management and conduct of elections. This makes it easy for compromised RECs and other state level INEC officers to undermine the credibility of the election sometimes with reckless impunity.”

While noting several cases of infraction of the electoral law across the country, the coalition observed “Cases of election-related violence in Akwa Ibom (18), Abia (nine), Anambra (seven), Delta (nine), Imo (six), Rivers (16), Benue (six), Katsina (17), Sokoto (17) and Kano State (seven). Killings in Rivers State where seven people (including a police officer) were killed as well as in Akwa Ibom (three), Delta (two), Katsina (two).

“In Rivers State, historically deep-rooted political animosities played out in a brazen, violent and naked manner to subvert the electoral process in many local governments in the state. In Akwa Ibom, there were also serious questions about the veracity of the results because of reports of active and direct partisan interference with the elections. There are also concerns about Abia State, which recorded multiple cases of electoral misconduct.

“The Situation Room hereby calls on INEC to urgently take steps to clinically scrutinise the final collated results from these states (Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Abia) against the polling unit results and make a reasoned judgment about them.”

There was increase in security threats—EU EOM

The European Union Election Observer Mission (EU EOM) echoed the observations of the domestic observers as it identified Rivers and Akwa Ibom States as areas where violence and deliberate interference with the electoral process were most pronounced during the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

The position of the EU is contained in the second preliminary report released by the international body in Abuja, yesterday, by the European Union Election Observation Chief Observer, Santiago Fisas.

The mission noted with concern that there was an increase in security threats during the last election than the previous presidential election, resulting in the killing of no fewer than 30 persons.

The mission said that although it did not find evidence of centralised systematic manipulation, the results from Rivers State included what it called “highly implausible data” while other election monitors had doubts about the data posted from other states in the South-South. They did not, however, name the other states.

The mission said that collation was the weakest part of the election day process particularly at the ward level. The EU also accused the PDP and the APC of misuse of incumbency power during the elections.

The Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) in its observation called for the harmonisation of the accreditation and voting processes. The President of CCN, His Eminence Emmanuel Udofia, who gave the organisation’s perspective on the election also lamented the low voter turnout.

Inconclusive polls in Imo

Meanwhile, the victory dance of Governor Rochas Okorocha in the Imo State governorship election was cut short early yesterday, when the poll was declared “inconclusive” by INEC.

The State Returning Officer, SRO, Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, cited the cancellation of 144,715 votes in various polling booths in about 23 local government areas for the action.

Professor Ibidapo-Obe also cited various complaints of irregularities that emanated from several polling booths across the 305 wards of the state.

He said elections would be repeated in four out of the 27 local council areas of the state. He, however, did not give the date of the rescheduled poll.

He identified Owerri Municipal, Ideato South, Ideato North and Ahiazu Mbaise as the four local government areas that would not be subjected to another round of voting.

After announcing results submitted to him, the SRO had said: “I shall not do any declaration. We have various cancellations in various units and wards. The affected polling units in the local governments totalled 144,715. The margin of lead that we calculated from the two leading parties is 79,529, and because of this figure, this election is inconclusive.”

Parties react

While Governor Okorocha said he was prepared to go for supplementary election, the state leadership of the PDP, accused INEC of reducing the scores of its flag bearer, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, in the result collated and declared at Ezinihitte Mbaise.

“In the case of Oru East local government area, while stakeholders were anxiously expecting the result, the INEC-EO, Mrs. Emmanuella Opara publicly confessed that she was kidnapped and taken to a secret location by agents of the APC candidate, where she was forced at gunpoint to enter fictitious figures. We hope to reconcile with INEC, areas affected by the irregularities and seek appropriate redress”, the State PDP Chairman, Chief Nnamdi Anyaehie said.

While saying that it was time wasting to declare the election inconclusive, Okorocha, however, boasted “if the election is properly conducted, my opponent will not get up to 100,000 votes.”

Vanguard recalls that the same scenario played out during the Chief Ikedi Ohakim era, and it was the supplementary election that sacked the incumbent governor and installed Okorocha.

Taraba, Abia elections inconclusive

The governorship election in Abia State which had the PDP candidate, Okeize Ikpeazu and the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA candidate, Alex Otti, in contention for supremacy was also declared inconclusive by the Returning Officer, Prof. Benjamin Ozurumba.

According to him, the margin of lead between the APC candidate, Okorocha and Ihedioha of the PDP was not higher than the number of votes cancelled or where the election did not hold.

The governorship election in Taraba State was also declared inconclusive by the returning officer, Prof. Muhammadu Kyari.

The returning officer made the declaration in Jalingo, the state capital after collating results from the 16 local government areas of the state.

He said the reason for the declaration was because the number of cancelled votes was above the gap between APC, who came second in the election to PDP who came first.

The tension, meanwhile, spurred violence across some sections of the state yesterday.

Vanguard gathered that the house of the Secretary to Taraba State Government in Gyembu, Sardauna local government was burnt down.

The country home of Abel Diah, the member representing Mbamga state constituency was also razed down by some angry youths who attempted to snatch the election materials from the collation centre of the area.

It was also learnt that two persons were killed in Rankaviri, the headquarters of Ardo-Kola local government area.

PDP Slow Death In Delta State

The national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday picked holes on last Saturday’s governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections, saying they were characterized by widespread irregularities, with alleged support by some security officers of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to the advantage of All Progressives Congress, APC.

PDP in a statement yesterday by National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, questioned the conduct of some INEC officials and security agencies, wondering if such officials were intimidated by APC’s blackmail and propaganda to deliver its candidates in the polls. The national leadership of PDP, inec

The national leadership of PDP, however, urged Nigerians and its supporters not to despair, but brace up and resist all anti-democratic and dictatorial tendencies.

The party said it was repositioning to stand by the people by providing a credible opposition and returning to power in four years time, and directed all its elected and appointed officials to be ready to make sacrifices, ensure judicious use of resources and gear up for a rescue mission in the overall interest of Nigerians.

It said:   “Evidences abound of widespread irregularities across the country with INEC rejecting results from the strongholds of PDP candidates for no just cause while accepting the  figures from those of the APC.

“In Lagos, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Ogun, Oyo, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Niger, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi and Imo states, there are proofs of electoral manipulations ranging from underage voting, ballot stuffing and intimidation of Peoples Democratic Party supporters to alteration of some aspects of the process in favour of APC.

“In Abia state, but for the outcry of the people and timely intervention of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC headquarters which rejected the illegal cancellation of results from three local governments and strongholds of the PDP by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) even after they have been announced by the returning officers, the PDP would have been robbed of its well deserved victory in those areas.”

National Convention: APC Governors To Meet Buhari

THE All Progressives Congress, APC All Progressives Grand Alliance and the Social Democratic Party, have demanded  the cancellation of the governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers State.

The parties in a joint press briefing also asked that fresh elections be conducted on a new date, maintaining that the  polls were marred by violence and intimidation of voters.

The governorship candidate of APGA, Mr. Charles Harry, explained that with the killing of five members of the APC  during the elections, the exercise failed to meet the minimum standard anywhere in the world.APC

Harry, who spoke in Port Harcourt on behalf of the governorship candidates of other political parties on Sunday, observed that elections did not hold in most parts of the state and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission not to declare any result.

“As you are already aware, the April 11 governorship and House of Assembly polls were fraught with violence and unbridled manipulation and intimidation by the Peoples Democratic Party, the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies.

“In most parts of Rivers State, elections didn’t hold at all as violence was unleashed on Rivers people. In Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, there were at least five reported deaths, all of which were members of the APC.

“Those killed include Obinna Ndubuoke, Jeophat Kingdom, Ndidi Ebere, Sydney Wokocha, and Clever Orukwowu (APC Youth Leader). Among the injured is Evangelist Faith, who was beaten to stupor at Dere in Andoni Local Government Area. Her whereabouts is still unknown

“Mr. Alifor Onyeso was shot by armed thugs led by Kelechi Nwogu, the PDP candidate for Omuma for House of Assembly. Chimenem Wagu, was shot by the PDP thugs and still in critical condition in Omanwa in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

“In Gokana Ward 4, Tambari Ngiah was kidnapped from his polling unit 005, In Khana Ward 2, Richard Dee Kae was injured with a machete and is in critical condition. In Khana Ward 15, Eric Gbobo was stabbed,” Harry said.

He described the election as a record breaker and an embarrassment based on the alleged gross irregularities that shaped its conduct.

According to the APGA governorship candidate, the story of Saturday’s election was one that left sour taste in the mouth of any sane person.

He said, “From start to finish, each segment was meant to be a failure, an embarrassment on the decency and decorum of Rivers people.

Speaking in Saturday’s election, the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, said the exercise was characterised by violence and killing of his party supporters and members.

“I don’t think they (INEC) will announce the result. When there is no election, there should not be a result. There was no security; if there were security, hoodlums would not be shooting for 12 hours.”

Reacting, the PDP governorship candidate, Chief Nyesom Wike, disagreed with the position of the political parties, adding that the PDP defeated them at the polls.

Wike, who spoke through his Media Assistant, Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu, urged the APC and other political parties to emulate President Goodluck Jonathan and congratulate the winner of the governorship election.

Indeed, we wonder if there is a deliberate attempt to also erode the discipline and professionalism of our security forces and entrench the culture of impunity our society,” the PDP stated.
