Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the need for political realignment amid evolving national dynamics.
Kwankwaso announced his resignation in a statement issued on Sunday, confirming that his decision takes immediate effect.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said.
The former governor described the decision as difficult, noting his longstanding relationship with the party and its members.
“As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he said.
Kwankwaso expressed appreciation to the leadership of the party, particularly the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and members of the National Working Committee, for their support during his time in the party.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time. I also thank the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the party, from the ward to the state level,” he added.
He also acknowledged members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and other supporters for their loyalty and commitment to the party’s ideals.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he stated.
Although Kwankwaso did not disclose the party he intends to join, sources within both the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and NNPP confirmed that the former governor is expected to formally defect to the ADC on Monday.
According to party insiders who spoke on condition of anonymity, Kwankwaso will publicly declare for the ADC in Kano.
A senior official of the party said the ADC National Chairman, David Mark, and the National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, are expected to receive the former governor into the party.
Sources also indicated that Kwankwaso may join the ADC alongside the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo.
Meanwhile, the development comes shortly after former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate and prominent ADC figure, Atiku Abubakar, hosted Kwankwaso in Abuja on Saturday.
In a post on his official X handle, Atiku described the meeting as a courtesy visit, noting that both leaders held extensive discussions on the state of the nation.
