Benin City, the Edo State capital, has secured a $1 million global innovation award after emerging among the top cities recognised in the prestigious Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Patrick Akhere.
According to the statement, Benin City was selected from more than 600 entries submitted by cities across the world. Only 25 cities from 20 countries eventually made the final list, with Benin City ranking among four African cities honoured in the competition.
The state government said the award underscores the city’s growing capacity to design innovative and practical solutions to pressing urban challenges, particularly in the area of healthcare delivery.
Governor Monday Okpebholo described the recognition as a major milestone that reflects the administration’s commitment to innovation and strengthening healthcare systems across the state.
“This recognition is a testament to innovation, resilience and the unwavering commitment of our team to transform healthcare delivery in Edo State,” the governor said.
“It reinforces that bold ideas from Benin City can compete- and win – on the global stage.”
Okpebholo congratulated officials of the Edo State Ministry of Health and members of the team that developed the initiative, noting that the award further positions the state as a centre for forward-thinking governance and impactful public sector reforms.
“Congratulations to my hardworking team and to the great people of Edo State. The world is watching, and we are just getting started,” he added.
The Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge is widely regarded as one of the most competitive global platforms for cities to present bold and innovative solutions to urban problems. Winning cities receive financial grants and technical support to implement projects designed to improve the lives of residents.
