The Nigerian Army has confirmed that some soldiers were killed during a fierce gun battle with bandits in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, said the troops engaged fighters loyal to notorious bandit leader, Gwaska Dan Karmi.
Osoba said the operation followed credible intelligence that more than 100 bandits had assembled at the camp to plan large-scale attacks on nearby communities and military supply routes.
“After days of intensive surveillance, ground troops, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, intercepted the bandits on January 31, 2026,” the statement read.
He said a heavy exchange of gunfire followed as the bandits attempted to flank and encircle the troops but were repelled by superior firepower.
“Many of the bandits were neutralised, while others fled with gunshot wounds. The camp was subsequently set ablaze before the troops withdrew,” Osoba stated.
According to him, the Nigerian Air Force has since launched interdiction missions to track and intercept the fleeing bandits, while ground forces continue to dominate the area.
“Regrettably, some gallant soldiers paid the supreme price during the encounter. One combat support vehicle was also struck by a Rocket-Propelled Grenade and caught fire,” he added.
Osoba said the army remains resolute despite the loss, honouring the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers.
“Combat efficiency remains high as troops continue to dismantle bandit networks and disrupt their supply chains across the region,” he said.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts under Operation FANSAN YAMMA to curb banditry in Zamfara and surrounding states, where armed groups have carried out repeated attacks, kidnappings and extortion.
