In the ever evolving theatre of Nigerian politics, where convictions are so often sacrificed on the altar of expediency, a few figures stand out for their moral clarity and unwavering commitment to principle. Among such rare personalities is Senator Dr Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, who was re-elected as the National Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), at the party’s national convention last Friday. He is a man whose remarkable career continues to illuminate the path of purposeful leadership and statesmanship.
Born on 1 July 1972, Basiru’s life journey reflects resilience, scholarship and service to humanity. From his early years, he exhibited a keen intellect and an insatiable appetite for knowledge, traits that would later define both his professional and political trajectory. Destiny soon redirected his path to the University of Lagos, where he pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree between 1994 and 2000. It was here that Basiru’s intellectual brilliance blossomed. Immersed in the rigours of legal scholarship, he distinguished himself as a thinker of formidable analytical depth and uncommon discipline. After earning his law degree, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in Bwari, Abuja, where he graduated with a Second Class Upper Division, further cementing his reputation as a diligent and gifted scholar of repute.
Yet Basiru’s academic odyssey did not end there. His thirst for knowledge propelled him back to the University of Lagos for a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree, where he specialised in areas such as Secured Credit Transactions, Planning and Compulsory Acquisition, Law of the Sea, and Comparative Company Law.
Ever determined to excel, in his pursuit of intellectual excellence, he subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Property Law from the same institution in 2016, a rare distinction that places him among the most academically accomplished politicians in contemporary Nigeria.
Before his transition to the terrain party politics and party administration, Basiru shared his knowledge with the next generation as a lecturer at Osun State University, Osogbo, where he nurtured young minds with the same intellectual discipline that had shaped his own career. His academic grounding has remained a defining feature of his public life, endowing him with the clarity of thought and depth of analysis that distinguish him within Nigeria’s political landscape.
Basiru’s political journey began within the progressive political family that originated with the Alliance for Democracy (AD). Through the party’s ideological metamorphosis – from AD to Action Congress (AC), then to Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and eventually to the All Progressives Congress (APC) – he remained steadfast, demonstrating an admirable consistency of purpose, clarity of thoughts and loyalty to progressive ideals.
His contributions to governance became particularly evident during the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola in Osun State, where Basiru served with distinction in several key capacities. As Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties, and later as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, he brought intellectual gravitas and legal acumen to the formulation and implementation of policies aimed at strengthening governance and justice delivery within the state.
In 2019, Basiru’s political influence extended to the national stage when he was elected Senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District. Within the red chamber, he quickly emerged as a respected voice of reason and clarity. As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora, Non-Governmental Organisations and Civil Societies, and later as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, he displayed exceptional communicative dexterity and institutional understanding, serving as the articulate spokesperson of the Senate during a critical period in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
His eventual emergence as National Secretary of the APC signalled a new chapter in his service to the nation. In this role, Basiru has demonstrated rare administrative competence, visionary ingenuity and strategic foresight, helping to stabilise the internal workings of the ruling party while promoting cohesion across its diverse political structures.
What perhaps most vividly illustrates Basiru’s character is his unyielding commitment to principle. In the face of the political turbulence that engulfed Rivers State, he did not hesitate to defend institutional propriety and party discipline. When tensions escalated between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Basiru spoke with the moral clarity befitting a statesman, and a visionary party administrator whose love and commitment to progressive ideals remain strong.
His courage is emblematic of a man who understands that leadership requires conviction. His stance underscored an essential truth that political institutions must be governed by rules and respect for constitutional authority.
Today, as Chairman of the Board of the National Sugar Development Council, a position to which he was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in January 2025, Basiru continues to expand the horizons of his public service, bringing his characteristic diligence and intellectual rigour to yet another sphere of national development.
In Senator Basiru, Nigeria finds a rare blend of scholar, lawyer and principled political leader. His journey is marked by perseverance and courage, and he stands as a testament to the enduring power of ideas and the transformative possibilities of principled leadership.
