Mr. Peter Obi, former Anambra State Governor and ex-Labour Party presidential candidate, has paid tribute to fallen members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, saying their true resting place is in the hearts and minds of the citizens they defended.
Obi said this in a message issued on Thursday to mark the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, a day set aside to honour soldiers who lost their lives while protecting the country’s sovereignty.
Describing the occasion as solemn, Obi said the remembrance should go beyond ceremonial observances and serve as a moment for national reflection and recommitment.
“On this day, we honour those who laid down their lives in service to our nation and recommit ourselves to being a country worthy of their sacrifice,” he said.
According to him, soldiers endured harsh conditions at the frontlines, standing watch in extreme weather while ensuring the safety of millions of Nigerians.
Obi noted that the most meaningful way to honour the fallen is by building a peaceful and progressive nation anchored on responsible and compassionate leadership.
“The most fitting tribute to our heroes is to live lives that promote peace and progress and to provide leadership that gives hope to the hopeless,” he said.
He also expressed solidarity with families of fallen soldiers, acknowledging that the remembrance day often rekindles painful memories of loss.
“For many families, this day is a reminder of an empty chair and a voice that can no longer be heard,” Obi said, adding that although the pain remains, the sacrifices of the fallen would never be forgotten.
The former governor concluded by offering prayers for Nigeria’s fallen heroes, asking that their souls rest in eternal honour and peace.
