Professor Mahmood Yakubu has handed his roles as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as he steps aside to await the confirmation of his re-appointment by the Senate.

Ahmed will act in that capacity pending when the Senate confirms the reappointment of Professor Yakubu as INEC chairman.

With his re-appointment, subject to Senate’s confirmation, Mahmood’s tenure will expectedly end in 2025.

The INEC Chairman, going by his schedule of roles and responsibility, will be in responsible for the supervision of the 2023 general elections, including the presidential  and National Assembly polls.

Mahmood was first appointed to office by President Muhammadu Buhari on 21 October 2015, succeeding Amina Zakari, who served as acting chairman.

In a letter to the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan, in line with the provisions of Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As amended), President Buhari had sought the nod of the Upper Legislative Chambers.

In the letter, the President said: “I am pleased to present  confirmation the nomination of professor Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) for a second and final term.”
