An era in world football has officially come to a close as Argentina’s captain and forward Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from the national team, bringing down the curtain on a historic international career.
The announcement comes after Argentina’s hard-fought campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where La Albiceleste finished as runners-up following a narrow 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the final.
Taking to social media, the legendary captain shared an emotional farewell with supporters across the globe.
He said: “After all this time since the final, and after thinking about it a lot, I want to tell everyone that I’m retiring from the national team. It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep inside, but I understand that this is the right moment. I swear I always gave everything… to bring you happiness and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.”
While the final chapter ended in heartbreak on the world’s biggest stage, Messi’s legacy with Argentina remains unmatched. After years of near-misses early in his career, he completely transformed his international destiny by orchestrating a golden era for his country.
