Nigeria’s electricity supply was thrown into disarray on Monday after the national grid collapsed, triggering a sharp drop in power generation across the country.
Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that electricity generation crashed from 2,052.37 megawatts to just 139.92MW between 2pm and 3pm.
The collapse also crippled power distribution, with only three of the country’s 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) able to take supply during the period.
Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) received the highest allocation at 80MW, while Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Benin Electricity Distribution Company each loaded 20MW.
All other DisCos – including Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola – recorded zero allocation, leaving large parts of the country without electricity.
The latest grid failure adds to a growing list of system collapses that have continued to undermine Nigeria’s fragile power sector and worsen supply shortages nationwide.
