Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has formally begun the process of defending the terrorism charges filed against him by the Federal Government, in line with a directive of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to Daily Post, an online medium, Kanu is currently submitting his defence documents in open court before Justice James Omotosho, after months of insisting that he would not proceed until he was shown the specific law under which he is being tried.
In order to fast-track the process, Justice Omotosho directed that the court’s registry be temporarily moved into his courtroom to enable Kanu file the documents without further delays.
Counsel for the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo, confirmed in court that he was ready to receive the defence processes and respond to them appropriately.
As of the time of filing this report, the judge had stood down proceedings for one hour to allow the filing exercise to be completed.
Kanu has repeatedly challenged the legality of the charges against him, arguing that the prosecution must clearly identify the terrorism provisions he allegedly violated. The filing of his defence marks a significant step in the long-running trial.
