United States President Donald Trump, in a serious move, has issued a sweeping executive order aimed at protecting American citizens from what he called “wrongful detention” abroad, warning that offenders will face severe consequences.

In a statement at the weekend, the United States Department of State declared that any individual, group, or government involved in the wrongful detention of U.S. nationals would be met with “unprecedented” punitive measures.

“Today, President Trump signed an Executive Order that takes unprecedented action to impose new consequences on those who wrongfully detain Americans abroad,” the statement said.

The penalties outlined in the order include economic sanctions, visa bans, foreign assistance restrictions, and travel limitations for U.S. passport holders engaging with such countries.

“Like the State Sponsor of Terrorism designation, no nation should want to end up on this list,” the statement warned.

It further added: “The bottom line: Anyone who uses an American as a bargaining chip will pay the price.”

The move, observers say, underscores what the administration describes as a bold step to put “not only America first but Americans first,” signaling a tougher stance against countries or entities that tend to use U.S. citizens for leverage.
