The Department of State Service (DSS) has detained the suspended chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa for alleged corruption-related offenses.
This development comes days after the also suspended Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN governor, Godwill Emefiele was taken into custody by the DSS following ongoing investigation at the apex institution.
DSS in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya, on Wednesday, said the invitation is related to some investigative activities concerning the suspended boss.
According to the statement of the DSS invitation, “The Department of State Services (DSS) has invited Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa, the suspended Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Bawa arrived a few hours ago.”
It would be recalled that the office of the Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF), on Wednesday, in a statement issued by Director of Information, Willie Bassey, said the EFCC boss’ suspension resulted from “weighty allegations of abuse of office levied against him.”
Without giving details of the allegations against Mr. Bawa, the statement said the anti-graft official needed to step aside “to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office.”
According to the statement, Mr Bawa has been directed to “immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation.”
