The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has declared the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Alex Otti as the winner of the March 18 governorship election in Abia state.

The declaration came after days of political logjam and anxiety.

Recall that the electoral commission had announced in Abuja on Monday, that it had suspended the collation of the results for the governorship election in Abia State.

The suspension came after political thugs invaded INEC’s office in the Obingwa Local Government Area in Abia.

INEC has now announced the result on Wednesday.

Otti polled a total of 175, 467 votes to defeat his closest rival, Okey Ahiwe of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party who scored 88,529 votes.

Enyinnaya Nwafor of the Young Peoples Party, YPP, came third with 28,972 votes.

Returning Officer and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, Professor Nnenna Oti, subsequently declared Otti the Governor-elect having polled the highest number of votes and satisfied all necessary requirements.
