Crisis is currently brewing at the entire spectrum of Delta state over a fresh one hundred and fifty billion naira loan (N150billion) approved by the lawmakers for Governor Ifeanyi Okowa amid poor execution of public projects, unpaid arrears of Pensioners and with barely few weeks to the end of his tenure.
These concerns raised by Nigerians and the people of Delta state in particular are beginning to generate anxiety in the state as there seems to be uneasy calm over the penchant for borrowing money on behalf of the people state which he allegedly converted to personal use.
Available records showed that the state debt burden is currently set on the race track to hit Eight hundred and fifty billion naira (N850billion) as Okowa seeks another fresh one hundred twenty billion loan (N120billion).
It was reported that the N20billion loan would be from Fidelity Bank while the N100billion would be from the new bank, Premier Trust Bank allegedly owned by Governor Okowa.
Delta state House of Assembly had during plenary presided over by the Speaker, now the state Peoples Democratic party, PDP Governorship candidate, Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori approved two separate loan requests of one hundred billion naira (N100billio) and twenty billion (N20billion) respectively for the state.
In his letter of request to the House made available to The New diplomat, Governor Okowa disclosed that one hundred billion (N100billion) would be withdrawn from an earlier approved One hundred and fifty billion (N150billion) consolidated syndicated loan.
Okowa, however, recalled in his letter of request to the House that on 26th April, 2022, the House approved for the state government to obtain N150billion with Zenith bank as the lead arranger.
But this intricate explanation by the Governor, seems to have provoked reactions from people of the state who are currently disturbed by the huge debt Okowa is pilling every blessed day at the twilight of his administration.
A network pool monitored by The New diplomat appears to place Okowa’s political career in precarious state as his aspiration to be the vice president of Nigeria ahead the February elections is currently in jeopardy.
