Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday applauded Nigerian student, Noel Ifeanyi Alumona for winning the 2022 AFS Award for Young Global Citizens.

Alumona who became the first African to win the prize since its inception in 1914 is studying Special Education in Vanderbilt University, United States.

Buhari’s congratulatory message is contained in a statement by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, on Monday in Abuja.

The student received the award during the International Youth Day organized by the United Nations Global Communications Department, the AFS Intercultural Programs and The Youth Assembly.

According to the statement, President Buhari lauded Alumona for kindness and sacrificial spirit, stressing that he already established foundations to cater for the needs of the physically challenged, vulnerable and less privileged.

Alumona’s outstanding character and dedication to helping others, particularly for attracting global spotlight to his fatherland was highly praised.

The awardee’s vigorous campaign to end violence against women and girls through proper orientation of boys on responsible behaviour, was recognized By the President.

“The President prays that the Almighty God will continue to lead, guide and grant Alumona wisdom to serve his country and humanity”, the statement by Adesina read.

Alumona is an Obama Foundation Fellow, United States Institute of Peace Fellow, and United Nations Youth Assembly Delegate.
