Long jumper Ese Brume has won a gold medal for Team Nigeria at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Brume won the women’s long jump event at the on-going Games to bag gold in a Game record of 7.00 metres ahead of Australia’s Brooke Buschkuehl (6.95m).
It was learnt that Brume had a no jump on her first attempt but bounced back right away to jump 6.99m to take the lead in the final and set a new Games Record.
Brume broke the Commonwealth Games record to win Team Nigeria’s 12th gold medal at the ongoing event.
She is a three-time African senior champion in the long Jump and holds a personal best of 7.17 m (23 ft 6+1⁄4 in). She is the African junior record and African record holder in the event and also a five-time African junior champion in athletics.
At the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships, the Delta-born won a silver medal at the long jump event, Nigeria’s only medal in the competition. She also won another silver medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, becoming the first African to win two Long Jump medals at the World Athletics Championships.
With the gold medal by Brume, Team Nigeria’s total haul of 12 gold medals is the best the country has ever secured since taking part in the Commonwealth Games.
Earlier on Sunday, The New Diplomat reported that Tobi Amusan, won gold in the 100M Hurdle, a feat she also attained in a spectacular fashion, also setting a new Games Record.
Others who won gold for Nigeria are Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, Grace Nwokocha (4x100m Relay); Miesinnei Mercy Genesis (50 kg), Blessing Oborududu (57 kg) and Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg) in Women’s Freestyle wrestling; as well as Adijat Adenike Olarinoye (55kg) and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal (59kg) in Women’s weightlifting.
Folashade Oluwafemiayo, Women’s heavyweight Para Powerlifting, Eucharia Iyiazi, Women’s shot put, Chioma Onyekwere and Goodness Nwachukwu in Women’s Discus throw.
