Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has described the defeat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just-concluded Osun governorship election as one that resonates the voice of the slain Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige.
The elder statesman said those who “conspired to catapult the slain Bola Ige’s destroyers to unmerited national prominence” have been justly served by the outcome of the Osun governorship election.
The New Diplomat had reported that Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defeated the incumbent governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, to emerge winner of the Osun governorship election held on Saturday.
Reacting in a statement issued on Sunday, Soyinka said the voice of Ige resounded from beyond the grave by the APC’s defeat.
Last April, Soyinka had rejected the emergence of Iyiola Omisore as the national secretary of the APC.
He wondered why the ruling party bestowed such a position on someone who has been allegedly linked to the murder of Ige.
According to him, Omisore’s position in the ruling party puts paid to any re-investigation into the murder of Ige. However, the APC National Secretary has been consistent in his denials over any involvement in Ige’s murder.
Reacting again, Soyinka emphasized that those who conspired to insult the memories of the late Ige have been ‘justly’ defeated in the Osun governorship election.
The statement reads, “Those who conspired to catapult his destroyers to unmerited national prominence, to insult the memories of the living, and jettison basic ethical constraints, have been justly served.
“It is a lesson that speaks to other zones of rightful public expectations, equity, and just entitlements.
“One despairs but continues to hope that there are still receptive minds in which such lessons will germinate.
“If we may adapt a wise saying from the ancients: the beast of burden, nicknamed Equity, ambles its mined course to destination but, sooner or later, that donkey arrives.”
