The Akure Division of Ondo State High Court on Friday sentenced three persons to death over the murder of Funke Olakurin, the daughter of leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.
The convicts are, Muhammed Shehu, Mazaje Lawal, Adamu Adamu. They were tried at the court on eight counts bordering on conspiracy, kidnapping, murder, armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and aiding and abetting.
The presiding judge, Justice Williams Rotimi Olamide, in his judgment said after trial, the three men were convicted on charges bothering on conspiracy to kill, murder, kidnapping and armed robbery.
The judge subsequently sentenced the three men to death by hanging or firing squad.
The judge held that the prosecution counsel proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt. The judge had reserved today for the judgement after listening to submissions and adopted the final written addresses from the prosecution and the defence counsel.
The judgement came three years after the killing of Mrs. Olakurin and the trials of the arrested suspects by the government.
In July 12, 2019, the 58-year-old late Olakurin was heading to from Akure, Ondo State from Lagos when she was attacked and shot by the armed herdsmen on the Benin-Sagamu expressway.
Her gruesome death at the time, attracted a wide range of condemnation from Nigerians, including political and social groups.
