There is tension in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos state as the state task force, Thursday, began impounding motorcycles who failed to adhere to the ban placed on the operation of commercial motorcycle operators by the state government.
The state government had on Wednesday issued a total ban on the activities of the Okada riders in six local government areas of the state, days after the killing of a sound engineer, David Imoh in the Lekki area of Lagos.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the state Joint Task Force, stormed the affected areas to implement the government’s directive.
It was gathered that many of the okada riders initially resisted the task force operatives from impounding their motorcycles, leading to panic in the area.
According to reports, some motorcyclists and their passengers got injured during the pandemonium which occurred in the area.
The crisis led to a stampede as pedestrians fled for fear of being caught up in the crossfire.
However, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in an interview with the Punch claimed there was no violence in the area.
According to him, the policemen went about their activities in a lawful manner, noting that there was no fatality.
He added that the public should discard report claiming that there was a clash in the area.
Recall that The New Diplomat had reported that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday, during a meeting with the state Commissioner of Police, Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers at the State House, Ikeja, announced the decision to ban operations of commercial motorcycles in Ikeja, Surulere, Eti Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island and Apapa local government areas.
