The death toll from the scene of the collapsed building at Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos has risen to 39, sources said, even though official figure given by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) put the number of deaths at 36, Thursday morning.

The official fatality figure was 22 as of late Wednesday.

However, on Thursday, NEMA confirmed that out of the 36 bodies recovered, 33 were men with three women.

This is coming three days after a 21-storey building at Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, collapsed. Since the incident, a recovery team has been deployed to the scene to rescue people out of the debris.

Giving update on the situation, the Acting Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial Office of NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye said the number of survivors remains nine; 1 female and 8 males.

According to Farinloye: “36 dead and 9 alive. Out of the survivors, 1 female and 8 males. Out of the dead, 3 females and 33 males dead.”

Meanwhile, rescue operations were still ongoing at the collapse site as of the time of this reporting as victims’ friends and relatives who have been camping near the site for over three days continue to wait for words on their loved ones.
