The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Saturday met with President, United States of America, Joe Biden on the sidelines of the ongoing G20 meeting in Rome, Italy.

Okonjo-Iweala, who is also a former Nigerian Minister of Finance took to her official twitter handle to disclose that she used the opportunity to appreciate the US President for supporting vaccine equity.

She tweeted, “Great to meet President Biden @POTUS on the sidelines of the G20 Meeting. Appreciate the USA’s support on vaccine equity &pandemic preparedness. Thanks for championing the recommendations of the G20 High Level Panel which I co chair with @Tharman_S @LHSummers @WTO @AmbassadorTai.”

The G20 is an inter-governmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union (EU). It works to address major issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.

Among issues on the agenda at the G20 meeting are climate change and COVID-19 vaccines.

Before the commencement of the G20, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) had lamented the inequity in the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, saying that G20 countries have received 15 times more COVID-19 vaccine doses per capita than countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
