Barcelona has appointed Ernesto Valverde as its new head coach ahead of next season.
The Catalans have been in search for a new coach to lead the club, following Luis Enrique’s decision to leave the club at the end of the 2016-17 campaign making the club to turn to the former Athletic Bilbao’s boss.
Valverde represented Barcelona during his playing career, wearing the Blaugrana jersey between 1988 and 1990.
He started his coaching career at Bilbao’s B side in 2002, before being promoted as head coach of the first team the following season.
He then enjoyed spells at Espanyol, Olympiacos, Villarreal and Valencia before eventually returning to Athletic in 2013.
Barcelona’s President, Bartomeu said “Valverde has the ability, judgment, the knowledge and experience to lead the club. He promotes the youth players and he understands the Barca’s style of play. He is a hard worker and he is a fan of using technology in training and in managing matches.”
Ernesto Valverde is expected to officially take charge at Barcelona as new head coach on Thursday, 1st of June, 2017.
