The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has asked the Nigerian Navy to return gunboats procured by the state to protect its territorial waters against activities of sea pirates.
Speaking at a town hall meeting to mark the 2nd anniversary of his administration which also culminated with 50th year of Rivers State’s creation, he said the purpose for which the gunboats were procured and delivered to the Nigerian Navy has not been fulfilled.
Governor Wike stated that this has put the state in fears of pirate’s attacks, saying the gunboats were being deployed for use in other states, rather than for protecting the Rivers people.
“If they are not going to use our gunboats to protect Rivers’ territorial waters, they should return our gunboats to us,” Wike said.
