Some gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have attacked Igangan in Ibarapa North Local Government Area(LGA) of Oyo state, reportedly killing about 20 people.

According to reports, the gunmen invaded the town in the late hours of Saturday in an attack that lasted for hours.

The gunmen were said to have stormed the area with various sophisticated weapons. Scores of people also lost their lives in the attack as many houses were set ablaze.

It was also gathered that the suspected herdsmen also set ablaze the palace of the monarch in the agrarian town.

Confirming the attack, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, described the incident as a shocking news.

Makinde, who took to his official Twitter handle urged the residents of the affected area to remain calm as a joint team of the security agencies are on top of the situation.

The tweet reads, “I have received the shocking news of the attacks on residents of Igangan, Ibarapaland, in the early hours of this morning. I am currently being briefed on the incidents. I urge residents to remain calm as security operatives are now in control of the situation.”

This incident is coming six days after the Oyo State, Chairman of Amotekun Corps, General Ajibola Togun (retd) had raised alarm that some foreign herders were about to unleash terror on the six states in the South West.

Togun had alarmed that some Fulani herdsmen allegedly had stormed the southwest with the aim of causing havoc and chaos.

Recall also that Ibarapa LGA had been in the news in recent times over the several reported cases of killings, kidnapping, maiming and destruction allegedly orchestrated by Fulani herdsmen.
