The reason for the leaders’ meeting was not immediately known, but it came at a time when Chad and Mali are going through political turbulence as a result of recent coups in both countries against ECOWAS statutes.
The Malian military recently sacked transition leaders expected to meander Mali towards democratic path following the 2020 coup in the West African nation. The development has been described as a “coup inside coup” by French President, Emmanuel Macron.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has been intervening in the crisis in Mali in his capacity as ECOWAS top envoy.
