The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions on Tuesday, gave the chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Mr Danladi Umar, two weeks to prepare his defence before the committee on allegations regarding an assault on a security guard, Clement Sagwak.
Umar is currently being investigated by the Senate following a petition against him.
Senator Istifanus Gyang who represents Plateau North Senatorial District at the Senate, had submitted a petition on behalf of his constituent, Clement Sagwak, who was allegedly assaulted by the CCT Chairman.
Sagwak accused the CCT chairman of abuse of power, assault, torture, and ‘xenophobia’.
Sagwak stated that he was assaulted by Umar and a policeman attached to him after he told the CCT Boss on March 29, 2021 that his car was not properly parked, on.
Umar who appeared before the committee on Tuesday prayed the committee to give him one week grace to study the details in the petition to enable him to respond appropriately.
However, the chairman of the Committee, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, granted the request of the CCT Chairman and resolved to give him two weeks to prepare his defence.
He is expected to appear before the committee again on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.
Akinyelure said even though the Senate would proceed on a two-week break on Thursday, the committee would reconvene during the break to hear Umar’s defence.
