The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar alongside other top traditional rulers in the country on Thursday presented a memoranda on the 1999 constitution review to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman of Senate Committee on Constitution Review.
Recall that the National Assembly, under the leadership of the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, had set up a committee to embark on a review of the 1999 constitution to accommodate provisions that would address the ongoing agitations by citizens nationwide.
The Senate, had in February, embarked on a fresh attempt to review the 1999 Constitution with the composition of a 56-member committee chaired by the Deputy President of the Senate, alongside eight principal officers who would serve as steering sub-committees within the larger committee.
The committee comprises of a senator from each of the 36 states of the federation and two senators each from the six geopolitical zones. The committee is expected to amend the 1999 constitution after adopting various inputs from a wide spectrum of stakeholders in the country.
Senator Omo-Agege, while announcing that his committee has received a memoranda from the Sultan of Sokoto and other top traditional rulers on the constitution review tweeted: “Courtesy visit by Top Traditional Rulers led by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alh. (Dr.) Muhammad Sa’ad Abubaker CFR. On the occasion of the presentation of Memoranda to the Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution.”
