Amid viral reports that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu has stepped down for his Deputy Inspector-General (DIG), Sanusi Lemo, to oversee the force, Police Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, has come out to debunk the report, stating that he is not aware of any new development.

Following the expiration of the service year of Adamu on Monday, speculations have been made on when he will step down and hand over to the next IGP.

Earlier on Tuesday, it was reported that Adamu has handed over duties to his deputy, Lemo, and has bowed out of the service.

However, Mba on Tuesday dismissed the reports as he said Adamu is still the IGP.

Mba confirmed this while speaking with The Nation. He said he is not aware of the viral news. In his words, “I am not aware of it.”

It would be recalled that Adamu who joined the police force on February 1, 1986, reached the mandatory 35 years in service on Monday.

Following the development, Garba Shehu, the presidential spokesman, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has not yet decided on who the next IGP would be. He however, said the appointment will be based on credibility.
