Nigeria hit another milestone in its number of confirmed daily infections from the Coronavirus pandemic, Thursday, as the second wave of the contagion rages on.
This is as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Thursday, January 21, announced 1964 new infections and 7 additional deaths from the Covid-19 disease.
The figure recorded across Nigeria’s 23 states and the FCT is the highest daily confirmed cases in the country till date, gaping the 1,386 cases reported, Wednesday.
Recall The New Diplomat had on 15th January, 2020 reported that Nigeria had recorded 1,867 as its highest daily figure before Thursday’s 1964 new cases.
The new figure brings the country’s total cases to 116,655 while its discharged cases stand at 93,646 and its death toll has risen to 1485.
From the Thursday’s breakdown, Lagos State which is the epicenter of the pandemic led with a total number of 824 cases, FCT followed with 246 and Plateau 166.
In addition, Lagos State total number of confirmed cases are, 43, 251 followed by FCT-15271.
Plateau and Kaduna also saw rise in cases, recording 166 and 128 cases respectively.

While raising concerns on the Covid situation in Nigeria, Tuesday, the Chairman, Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, Boss Mustapha had revealed that South Africa and Nigeria have continued to report highest daily count, adding that South Africa, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Algeria and Kenya account for 76% of all cases in the region.
“Nigeria has moved up to the third position in highest cumulative caseload but remains 2nd for new cases and 5th highest in cumulative deaths on the WHO African region” he said.
