Explosion from a fuel tanker rocked Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Tuesday, reportedly killing a victim and burning scores of cars caught up in the fire as of the time of this reporting.

The incident reportedly occurred around 8:15 am due to brake failure as the 33,000-fuel laden tanker was plying the Presidential Boulevard Road close to the popular Kuto roundabout in Abekuta.

An eyewitness told The New Diplomat that the tanker hit a motorcycle on motion, before ramming into some commercial vehicles along the road.

He said moments after, the tanker exploded, spreading the fire and causing panic in the area populated by students as the incident happened opposite Lawson Group of Schools, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Also, some commercial vehicles hit by the tanker were said to be conveying returning students back to schools.

Ogun emergency responders have been deployed to battle the fire and also attend to victims of the explosion.
