A powerful explosion has rocked the Trans-Niger Pipeline (TNP) in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday.
This has triggered widespread panic and concern among residents and raised fears of environmental devastation and economic disruption.
The blast, which occurred near the Bodo-Bonny Road currently under construction, sent flames and thick black smoke billowing into the night sky.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a deafening boom shortly before the pipeline, a critical artery for transporting crude oil to the Bonny Export Terminal, erupted in flames.
While the fire has been put out, the cause of the explosion is unknown at this time.
Although authorities have yet to determine the cause of the explosion, suspicion is mounting that it may be allegedly linked to sabotage.
The incident comes amid heightened and soaring political tensions in Rivers State, following recent threats by militant groups to target oil infrastructure.
