The Supreme Court has confirmed the demise of its serving Justice, Sylvester Ngwuta.
The New Diplomat had reported that Justice Ngwuta who hailed from Amofia-Ukawu, Onicha Local Government area of Ebonyi State, died in the early hours of Sunday at the age of 69.
Justice Ngwuta began his legal practice at Abakaliki, in 1978. He was appointed as the Judge of the High Court, Abia in 1995 and was later promoted to the Court of Appeal in 2003. He rose to the Pinnacle of his career when he was sworn-in as the Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2011.
Reacting to the demise Ngwuta, the Supreme Court revealed that the Judge was sick prior to this death.
This was contained in a statement released by Hadizatu Uwani Mustapha, The Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court.
The statement also revealed that Ngwuta died at about 2:30 am at the Intensive Care Unit(ICU) of the National Hospital, Abuja, where he was receiving treatment.
The statement reads, “He felt sick and was admitted, in the last one week, in the National Hospital, Abuja. But, before he was moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital on Friday, March 5 he tested negative to COVID-19 investigative test conducted on him. Hon. Justice Ngwuta was due to retire from the Supreme Court bench on attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years on March 30, 2021. His remains have been deposited in the National Hospital mortuary pending the arrangement for his burial.”
