Says Fubara Committed Impeachable Infractions

By Abiola Olawale

The political turmoil in Rivers State took a dramatic turn as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, made a bold statement amidst the ongoing feud with his successor Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

Speaking at a media parley in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike, a two-term governor of Rivers State declared that “heaven will not fall” if Fubara were to be impeached, further intensifying the already volatile crisis rocking the state.

The former Rivers State governor, who has been at loggerheads with his successor, accused Fubara of failing to adhere to the principles of governance.

Wike’s remarks come on the heels of escalating tensions between Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, many of whom remain loyal to Wike.

Wike, known for his fiery rhetorics and punchy statements at all times regardless of the political atmosphere , did not mince words during his speech.

He maintained : “If you have committed an offence to be impeached, what’s wrong? Is it a criminal offence? It’s provided in the constitution. Am I a member of the Assembly?

“If you have committed an infraction of the constitution and the Assembly deems it fit to say, you should be impeached.

“I have heard people say: ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be break down of law and order’. Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”

It would be recalled that Fubara and Wike have been locked in a titanic battle for control of the political structure of the state as well as its economic fortunes.

The raging feud between the duo has triggered political turmoil in Rivers state, culminating in conflicting and multiple court orders and outright fragmentation of the Rivers House of Assembly into two factions; Pro-Fubara and Pro-Wike.

In December 2023, Fubara and Wike signed an eight-point peace deal purportedly to address the raging feud.

The peace deal was signed at the presidential villa in Abuja after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu. However, since the development, the crisis in Rivers State has continued to heighten beyond redemption unabated with worsening dimensions and consequences.
