The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has chosen to pick its 2023 Presidential candidate from one of the zones in the northern region of the country.

Recall the PDP had earlier zoned its national chairmanship ticket, won by Senator Iyorchia Ayu to the North, raising hopes that the presidential candidate would emerge from the southern part of the country.

Recently, some governors elected on the platform of the PDP had embarked on fresh move to zone the presidential ticket of the party in the 2023 general elections to the South.

This was in line with the position of the 17 southern governors that power should shift to the South in 2023.

However, a former Governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu during a visit of the Atiku Support Organisation in Minna, on Friday asserted that he is confident of the success of the group, assuring them of his support. He noted that the party’s decision is as a result of the requests of members.

“In our zoning agreement, we have agreed to re-zone the North as requested by others but we have agreed written openly as a result of what has happened that any candidate from any part of the country can now contest this election.”

According to the former Governor, the group has done wonderfully well by going round nooks and crannies of the country to ensure that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerges as the party flag bearer and is elected President of Nigeria come 2023.

Meanwhile, the National Coordinator of the group, Dr. Victor Moses, thanked the former governor for his continued support for Atiku Abubakar even as 2023 approaches.

It was gathered some PDP governors had met with one of their colleagues in the North-east to help mount pressure on Atiku to accept the position of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party. As the incumbent chairman of the PDP BoT, Senator Walid Jubrin would be rounding off his tenure before the 2023 general election.

But sources said Atiku, a serial presidential candidate, is only keen on clinching the PDP presidential ticket once more as he continues with his quest to land the number one job in the country.
