The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has stated he is unaware that embattled Super Eagles coach Finidi George has tendered his resignation.

In response to a WhatsApp message seeking confirmation of George’s resignation, Gusau responded to media inquiries to the effect that he is not yet aware the Finidi George has resigned.

According to the New Diplomat, George’s resignation surfaced online following the NFF’s announcement on Thursday that it would hire an expatriate technical adviser for the Super Eagles. This decision was prompted by the team’s poor performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifying series.

The Super Eagles players have accumulated only three points from a possible 12, placing them fifth in their six-team Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series, jeopardizing their hopes of securing the ticket of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the national team’s dismal performance has frustrated Nigeria’s passionate football fans, who are still reeling from the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

However, the NFF’s announcement on Thursday received mixed reactions, with some fans calling for the resignation of both the federation’s board members and Finidi George.

According to reports, Finidi was upset that the NFF leadership failed to address key issues, such as players arriving late to camp and the lack of support mobilization for the Eagles during their match against Benin Republic in Ivory Coast. These concerns were not raised during a recent meeting between the NFF and the sports minister.

Finidi, who has been in charge of the Super Eagles since April and has overseen just two games, reportedly resigned from his position on Tuesday morning.
