Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, the Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District of Borno State in the Senate, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate steps to lower the rising fuel and food prices.

In a statement released on October 11, 2024, in Abuja, Ndume raised concerns about what he called growing hardship that Nigerians are facing due to escalating cost of living.

Ndume warned that some individuals within the administration are pushing harmful policies that are worsening the situation for ordinary citizens. He emphasized that the inflation and high exchange rates have created unbearable conditions, especially for poor families.

He said: “The sharp increase in the prices of fuel, food, and basic services is unbearable for many families.

“I believe President Bola Ahmed Tinubu genuinely wants to improve Nigeria, but some of his advisers are misleading him with harmful policies. These individuals are making life unbearable for ordinary citizens, and if nothing is done, the blame will fall on the President.”

Ndume also expressed fears about some individuals he claimed are trying to undermine Tinubu’s administration by using these harsh economic reforms to portray the President as responsible for the deteriorating conditions.

Ndume continued: “People can barely feed themselves. Farmers can’t transport their produce because of high fuel costs, and this is pushing food prices even higher. The situation is becoming unbearable.

“To travel from Abuja to Maiduguri is now a luxury few can afford. The rising cost of living is driving people to despair,” he lamented.

Ndume’s warning comes as Nigerians continue to grapple with the effects of economic reforms that have led to steep increases in the cost of fuel, food, and transportation across the country.

It would be recalled that under the current administration, fuel prices have risen sharply following the removal of subsidies, which has had a ripple effect on food prices and basic services.
