The Ekiti State Assembly’s crisis took a turn for the worse on Monday as the lawmakers impeached the Speaker, Gboyega Aribisogan, who was recently elected.

17 lawmakers out of the total 25 lawmakers voted for the impeachment of Aribisogan and his indefinite suspension from the Assembly.

To replace the impeached speaker, Olubunmi Adelugba has now been elected as the new speaker.

It would be recalled that the Ekiti state Assembly has been embroiled in controversy following the death of the former speaker, Funminiyi Afuye.

The New Diplomat had reported that Afuye passed away at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital on October 19 after suffering cardiac arrest at the age of 66 years.

A month after his demise, the parliament held an election which saw Aribisogan, who is the representative of Ikole 1 Constituency in the Assembly and a two-term lawmaker, emerged as the speaker.

However, since his emergence he has not been recognised by the state government, currently led by Governor Biodun Oyebanji.
