The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has opposed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to rename the University after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recall that the announcement renaming the university, which was made during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on July 17, 2025, has triggered controversy, with ASUU labeling the move as “politically motivated” and a “brazen affront” on the university’s 50-year legacy.

In a press statement issued by Dr. Abubakar Mshelia Saidu, ASUU UNIMAID Chairperson, the union faulted the renaming of the institution as an attack on the institution’s identity and academic integrity.

The union said it has vowed to contest the action in an “unequivocal, forceful, and commanding” response, mobilizing its veterans, executive council, and Congress to resist the decision.

The statement reads in part: “This action is not merely shocking; it desecrates the sanctity of our alma mater,” the union said, especially as “the university prepares to mark its 50th anniversary under the widely respected ‘UNIMAID’ identity.

“We must articulate our adamant opposition and demand the immediate reversal of this ill-conceived and deeply offensive decision.”
