A Nigerian professor, identified as Professor Ignatius Uduk from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom, has been sentenced to three years in prison over electoral fraud offence committed during the 2019 general elections.

Uduk, who served as a Collation/Returning officer for Essien Udim State Constituency during the 2019 general elections, was convicted on charges of publishing false election results and perjury.

The sentencing was delivered by Justice Bassey Nkanang of the High Court in Akwa Ibom State.

The New Diplomat reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had dragged Uduk before the court in 2019.

The Electoral Commission said the case is part of its broader effort to address electoral malpractices.

This comes after another UNIUYO academic, was similarly convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment in an earlier trial that began in 2019 for offences related to the same elections.
