Police in ‘A’ Division Ughelli, Ughelli North LGA, Delta State, on Sunday gunned down two suspected armed robbers in a gun duel which lasted for 20 minutes, just as one the of gang members escaped with a bullet wound.
The police had foiled the robbers attempt to rob bank customers who were leaving the bank ATM at about 3.00 pm along Market road within the main town, which has witnessed a rise in robbery and other violent crime in the area.
The Delta State Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, who confirmed the report, said the police at ‘A’ Division, Ughelli received a distress call that a gang of 3 armed robbers were operating near one of the new generation banks along Market road Ughelli and they swung into action immediately.
Onovwakpoyeya disclosed further that on getting to the scene of the operation, the robbers entered their car and zoomed off but the police gave them a hot chase that later resulted in gun duel along Isoko road within the main town that led to the killing of two of the three robbers as the third escaped with a gun wounds.
A source at the police station who spoke anonymously said two locally made pistols, many lives cartridges, one expended cartridge and one Golf 3 Red car with registration number AJ 220 EFR were recovered.
“We received a distress call from the public that a gang of three armed robbers are operating within the Ughelli, along Market road and we swung into action immediately on sighting the police they (robbers) opened fire on the police and we immediately returned fire to them, and with our more superior power and two were gun down and one escaped with bullet wounds.”
