BEYOND BOOTS ON THE GROUND

By Dakuku Peterside Not long ago, a well-worn phrase began to echo again in Nigeria’s public conversation: “We need more boots on the ground.” It is a phrase that sounds decisive, almost comforting. *Asks Dr Ibe Kachikwu to stop planned meeting

*To address accusations of corruption by SGF

There are strong indications that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be meeting on Tuesday 25 October 2016 to take decisive stand on the crisis rocking the party in Delta State.

According to a reliable source within the NWC, the meeting is specifically being convened to consider issues arising from Delta state, especially the report of the disciplinary committee in respect of the Okpozo-led Elders group who purportedly set up an illegal parallel State Exco in Delta recently. The Delta State Exco disciplinary committee, it is learnt, recommended expulsion from the party for the confirmation of the NWC.

It was also learnt that the NWC will address head-on the issue of the legality of the subsisting Exco in Delta and the leadership of the party in the state. To this end, it is understood that the National Chairman has reached to Dr. Ibe Kachikwu to shelve the meeting he planned to hold on Saturday October 22nd 2016 in Delta State until the NWC meets on Tuesday. The NWC, it was further learnt, will protest to President Buhari, the off handed abuse and branding of the NWC as corrupt by the SGF.

It would be recalled that the APC in Delta State has been enmeshed in a leadership tussle between the leader of the party in the state, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor and a group of party members loyal to second republic politician, Senator Francis Okpozo. The matter got more complicated with the entry of Chief Great Ogboru of Labour Party and Hon Victor Ochei of the Accord Party and their followers as they schemed to benefit from the crisis by allegedly attempting to hijack the leadership.

The New Diplomat source revealed that the NWC is very aggrieved with the allegations of corruption that were reportedly levelled against it by the SGF at a recent meeting hosted by him.
