One of the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a former governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has clinched the presidential ticket of the ruling party to contest next year’s election.
Tinubu secured the presidential ticket of the party after weeks of political drama and intrigues during which the party held several meetings and tried but failed to get a consensus candidate. When things were seeming to get away, Tinubu delivered a political masterclass to emerge as the standard bearer of the APC.
He polled a total of 1271 votes out of the total 2, 260 delegates who voted at the presidential Primary which held at Eagle Square, Abuja.
Tinubu was returned elected as the APC presidential candidate in the forthcoming 2023 elections by the Chairman of the election APC Presidential Election Committee and Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.
He defeated top contenders like Former Governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi who scored 316 votes; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who polled 235 votes; Senate President, Ahmed Lawan who scored 152 votes.
Tinubu will now face the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi of Labour Party, among a host of other in the 2023 presidential election.
Prior to the commencement of the election, former governor of Akwa Ibom, Goodswill Akpabio; former Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun; Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State; the only female aspirant, Uju Ken-Ohanenye; Senator Ajayi Boroffice; former Speaker of House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole; Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State; all withdrew from the presidential race, endorsing Tinubu.
On the other hand, the youngest presidential aspirant of the party, Nicholas Felix also bowed out of the presidential race to support Osinbajo.
Following the withdrawals, only 14 aspirants contested for the presidential ticket.
